Beto O’Rourke on Guns

Jake Bruton

The need for gun control is being debated among politicians to citizens and everyone seems to have a different look on how they should handle it. Most Republicans believe that there shouldn’t be gun control; whereas, Democrats believe that there need to be strict gun laws. Beto O’Rourke, a Democratic nominee for presidency, is from El Paso, where a shooting happened in the past months, and he is aggravated and wants to take all of the AR-15’s. Some say that this isn’t possible, and they would be right, but there are some people that still believe that it is possible to take every AR-15 from everyone gun owner. There are more things to it than just saying you’re going to take all the guns, there is a legal process.

O’Rourke has proposed a mandatory confiscation of guns where individuals would be compensated for their firearms. He believes that they can have everyone just give their guns and get the money back for the gun, the problem with that is not everyone is just going to give you their guns. At that a President cannot issue a blanket confiscation but they can work with Congress to pass a law. The only thing that this would do is, it would be illegal to have an assault weapon and I know that there would be people who would not care. What would be considered an assault weapon though?

The NRA estimates that there is 8.5 million to 15 million assault rifles in the united states. That is about 2% to 4% of all guns in the USA. There are multiple ways that this could work and how this could go terribly wrong. If you do not want your guns taken away a vote against Beto O’Rourke might just make the difference. Make your decision and if you’re able to make your voice heard.
